Thursday 24th July - Edinburgh Castle, Mary Queen of Scots and dinner in Culross

We left Easter Cottage by car to Ferrytoll where we caught the bus to Edinburgh. We arrived at the bus station near St. Andrew's Square. From there we went to the Information Centre across Princes Street to find street maps of Eyemouth etc - no luck. We went down a level to the shopping mall to The Whisky Shop to buy some for Muir and Mary, as well as some other bits and pieces like kilt socks and presents for Mary-Ann's family. We had lunch in there of some rather appetizing sandwiches and a terrible coffee!

After we finished that we walked across the North Bridge to the Royal Mile, turned right and walked up to the castle.

The best part of the castle visit was meeting Mary Queen of Scots in the Great Hall!

Keeping an eye on the time we finished there and walked back out and down "The Mile" Mary-Ann got her photo taken beside a piper

and then by sheer chance I spotted Advocates Close that my paternal grandfather, John Kinlay Laidlaw had written a book about.

We walked down to Market Street and found the little pub that we were looking for "The Hebrides" and bought two whiskies for Sue and Graeme Wrigley of Cambridge NZ and a beer for ourselves.

We headed back to the bus station and saw the new smart trams that Edinburgh has established.

In the evening we went to dinner at Culross and I went with Muir in his La Gonda. It was a some journey! We seemed to be hurtling along- lots of speed signs warning us to "Slow down"!

The Red Lion: Culross

The dinner at the Red Lion with a "sizzling steak" as Muir called it was great - a lovely little pub. I had Haggis Craggans as a starter - haggis in a ramekin with a cheese topping!

Then we went home for Dram Time!
