Friday 11th July Staten Island, the Guggenheim Museum and Times Square

On Friday morning we had to get up early to catch the Staten Island ferry which was free!

Once out in the harbour the Statue of Liberty hove into view.

On the way back we got this impressive sight of Manhattan Island skyline.

Watching the docking process was interesting.

Back on dry land we were hungry. Ian found this little lunch bar called Zigglinis. I had a cheesesteak sandwich - a New Jersey speciality - all great for $15US.

Our surroundings dominated the lunch area.

On the way to Wall Street the hub of the financial district.

This Bull near Wall Street was an impressive piece of sculpture

The Guggenheim Museum of Art, built by the famous architect Frank Llyod Wright was an  impressive piece of architecture. Inside we viewed the Thannhauser Collection of European masters which included works by Picasso, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Monet, Manet and so on. Quite a feeling to stand in front of the originals.

By the this stage we were getting a bit weary, but decided to soldier on and go to Times Square. This was going to involve a little bit of walking and a trip on the Subway:

Eventually we got to the Square; a blast of electronic signage and people and one almost completely naked woman painted as the American flag, that I missed!

At about 4:00pm we traipsed back to the train and then the car park and we were on our way home, passed the Apollo Theatre where Michael Jackson played ...

... and over the George Washington Bridge over the Hudson River

... and home pretty tired but satisfied!
