Minster Abbey and Gatehouse

Up the hill we found a sign that said "Abbey" and followed it and found
an ancient  stone abbey and its adjacent buildings with all the headstones shifted to form the boundary fence - true!
These buildings were built in 670 AD during the time of the Saxons, 450 years before the Normans came!

The building have a very squat muscular look like this west entrance on the left.

The southern entrance on the right.

This the Norman door in the south wing - close up and a distant shot of the west wing.

Here is the candelabra inside the oldest part and the timbered roof of the main section and a shot of the beautiful timber roof in the main body of the church.

This is the spiral stair inside the gatehouse - a 12th century foliated stone newel staircase.

This was weird; a row of headstones to make a pathway!

Sir Thomas Cheyne KG household chancellor to Henry VIII, died 1516

Here is the brass for Lord John de Northwood.
