The American way: trees, houses, fire, buses, taxis, bridges

It took a while for all the differences in the American way of life. The first thing we noticed on the way from the airport on our first day were the distinctive yellow school buses and taxis.
The highway was entirely enclosed by trees and often woods into the distance on either side and this turned out to be the same everywhere.

The houses round round Ian's place had two designs that stood out:

Every now and then we would come across a fire hydrant. This one had an uncanny resemblance to a little man.
The iron rod with the lollipop on the end was to mark the place in winter when it was covered in snow.

A convenience store is the American version of the corner dairy. Pallisades Mall was a huge mall in Nyack of which "Target", where I bought my sandals, shorts and T-shirt, was just a part. Costco, however, was another huge store where you could buy just about anything you wanted. Everybody seemed to want to drive one of those muscular four wheel drive things - we even saw Utes with extended back axles so that they could accommodate double wheels either side!

Because of the Hudson River flowing down out passed New York, big graceful suspension bridges appeared everywhere.

Here is the George Washington Bridge
