Wednesday 6th August - Uig

Today we set off from Inverness to make our way to Uig. We had to journey to the Kyle of Lochalsh where the new bridge to Skye makes the old ferry obsolete.

We sang, “Over the Bridge to Skye” as we crossed.
We planned to stop in Portree to have lunch and to buy some supplies for Uig. To our horror there were no parking cones all over the central streets and police present to make sure that you didn’t sneak into a parking banned area. It was the annual Portree Games and Agricultural Day! We found a very crowded restaurant with two chairs spare. We checked with the other couple sitting at the other chairs if we could sit down. They said yes and struck up a conversation. They were Alasdair and Angela Gillies from Digg, Staffine, Skye who had visited Christchurch a while ago. They invited us to their place for a cup of tea, but after listening to their description of how to get there, our complete lack of local knowledge and the fact that we were pushed for time we weren’t able to accept their kind offer.

We did a bit of window shopping, bought some supplies at the Co-operative and proceeded on to Uig. The weather steadily improved until by the time we got there it was a beautiful sunny day with spectacular views down over the harbour.

The drive was up to the hostel was something else – nearly stalled trying to get up in second gear.

Brandt, the hostel manger, was very nice and helpful. We got settled, had tea and a bit of time to relax.
